Dorselma "Doris" Armstrong

Dorselma “Doris” Armstrong, 90, of New Castle passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Henry County Hospital. She was born August 24, 1924 in New Castle, Indiana to the late Ollo and Lola Caldwell.

Doris was a member of South Memorial Drive Church of God where she originated and developed the Karing Keenagers (55 years and over) and continued as the Director, resigning after twenty-five years. She was a life member of the Women of the Church of God having served as past president. She was a member of the Indiana South Women of The Church of God and served in various capacities.

Doris was valedictorian of her 1942 graduating class of Mt. Summit High School, and graduated with honors from Muncie, Indiana Business College in accounting and secretarial. She attended Richmond Earlham College, studying special Management programs, and attended Leadership Seminars led by John C. Maxwell.

She loved music and played first chair violin for the high school orchestra, and the bass drum for high school band. She was a member of the drama class and choir. She studied voice at the Stamps Baxter School of Music in Evansville. She was a piano student of the late Donald Rogers and Memory Richey.

Her first employment was by A.B. Ayers as personal secretary and bookkeeper, and was sent to Cambridge City to audit the records of the Eastern Indiana Gas Company, returning to New Castle to continue as secretary and bookkeeper for the company, the Texas Oil and Mining Company, Ayres Realty Company of Indianapolis, and the Indiana Gas and Water Company of New Castle.

She retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, World Bestos Division, after thirty three years, having served as Accounts Payable Manager, Secretary to the Office Manager, the Plant Manager, and the President. She served as TWA (Trans World Airlines) ticket agent for World Bestos, out of Indianapolis. She took one year out for the birth of her daughter and returned as Purchasing Agent, later resigning that to become Executive Secretary, then Administrative Assistant to the President.

Other affiliations: New Castle Business and Professional Women, Inc., member, board member and past president. Here she developed and produced their newsletter and was selected as 1978 Women of the Year. Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women, Inc., board member, served two years as District Director for eleven clubs. Women’s Division of New Castle Area of Chamber of Commerce as chairman, Board of Directors and advisory board. Senior Night Club, Chairman and representative to the Chamber board. Altrusa International Inc., president, board of directors, state board, newsletter editor and produced (won state). She worked for Visiting Nurse Health Care, in Anderson, Indiana and was a board member also, Visiting Nurse Advantage, in Anderson, and was a charter member and board of directors. Henry County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Inc., president, board of directors, Legislative chairman, developed and produced newsletter for local and state. She was involved with the Indiana Hospital Auxiliary for State, Concerned Hospital Advisory Information Network (CHAIN). She was a member of the Henry County Memorial Hospital Foundation and was chairman of the board of directors. Doris was the president of the Lady Lions and a member of the United Way Board. She was public relations chairman secretary with the Optimist Club for “Looking Up With Pride” flag project, State Roads 3 and 38. Doris was involved with the Indiana Ministries of the Church of God in Anderson, Indiana and was member of the senior adults state task force and planning, editing and producing newsletter, and organized state groups.

She was on the senior adult’s board of Christian Education through International Convention of the Church of God. Doris was a charter member of the National Fellowship of Older Adults in Anderson and co-authored “First Leadership Book” publication. Was board of directors for the Triple L Youth Ranch. She donated her time and talents to the Hope Hill Children’s Home in Hope, Kentucky and was co-chairman for national fundraising campaign for Hope. She was elected to the board of directors and served as acting executive director living at The Home.

Doris was a member of Family Connection Inc, board of church extensions, strategic planning and advisory council. She was a member of South Memorial Drive Church of God where she was a Sunday school teacher, member coordinating council, and Pastor’s advisory council. Doris was also a member of Christian Women Connection.

She was a member of Henry County Saddle Club, United Senior Action and Henry County Home Extension. She was a past member of American Quarter Horse Association, American Kennel Club, American Association of Retired Person, Art Association of Henry County, National Association for Executive Secretaries, Secretary’s Guild, Henry County Historical Society, Fellowship of Merry Christians. She served five years as judge for V.F.W. Senior Student Speech Contest and two years as judge of the Baby Contest at the Portland County Fair.

She is listed in the 1976-77 book entitled “Leaders and Noteworthy Americans’ and 1977 she was honored as New Castle Henry County Hometown Heroine. In 1992, she was elected and honored as Henry County, Older Woman of the Year, also was elected and honored as Older Women of the Year for the State of Indiana.

Doris loved her family, church and her many friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Woods of Greenville, SC; a granddaughter, Dusty G. Woods; a grandson, Odie Cutter (Erin) Woods; great grandchildren, Cutter, Daisy, and Bear all of Greenville, SC; niece, LaVerne Pogmore (son, Larry and daughter, Vicki); nephews, William “Bill” (Mary Ann) Caldwell of NB and Robert “Bob” (Priscilla) Caldwell of Albany, KY, Danny Vaughn; several great nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mort “Jack” Armstrong whom she was married 58 plus years; a brother, E. Barbee Caldwell and his wife, Marcella; a sister Beulah Vaughn and her husband, Pierce.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Chris Gammello officiating. Graveside services for family only will follow. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Hope Hill Children’s Home in Hope, KY.
