Eldon Ray Holcomb

January 30, 1932 — October 16, 2016

Eldon Ray Holcomb, 84, a resident of Hagerstown passed away Sunday morning, October 16, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born January 30, 1932 in Rogersville to the late Robert Glen and Bernetha L. (Houser) Holcomb.

Eldon attended Blountsville and Mooreland High Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He retired from Dana Corp., Hagerstown in 1983 after 30 years of service. Eldon had also worked as a tour guide at the Wilbur Wright Birthplace for many years. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Eldon enjoyed gardening, reading and story telling. A loving and compassionate man, he never met a stranger and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include six children: Steve Holcomb of Hagerstown, Ed (Mary) Holcomb of New Castle, Brenda (Bruce) Berg of Mooreland, Rita Holcomb (Richard Woodall) of East Palatka, FL, Monte Holcomb of Mooreland and Mark (Cindy) Holcomb of Fairland; thirteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; five siblings: Helen Gossage, Norma Crandall, Dorothy Pope and Larry Holcomb, all of New Castle and Mary Lou Cartwright of Andrews; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, Eldon was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years: Barbara Ann Holcomb in 2003; a sister: Betty Fleming; brothers: Robert “Bud” and Dickie Holcomb, and an infant brother, Harold Edward Holcomb.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Thomas Current officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the New Castle Henry County Public Library, 376 S. 15th St. New Castle, IN 47362 or the Wilbur Wright Birthplace, 1525 N.
