Ermel Ora Bennett, 92 of New Castle, formerly of Lewisville, Indiana, passed away Sunday March 8, 2015, at home following a brief illness.
Ermel was born January 16, 1923 at Linton, Indiana, a son of the late Ora and Minnie Bennett. He was raised in Linton and Shelbyville area. He married Norma June Walton on February 9, 1946, and eventually they made their home in Lewisville.
Ermel was in the Army Air Force from 1947-1951. He hoped one day he could go up in a plane one more time. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0137, a Mason at the Shelbyville Lodge, and a past member on the Sheriff Department reserves and Horse Patrol. He retired as a tool and die maker from New Castle Engineering in 1989. He enjoyed bowling and was on several leagues. He enjoyed doing his wood working and made something special for each of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed painting from his earlier years and within the last five years he painted several paintings which were place throughout his house. He loved his rabbits, horses and dogs. He flew model airplanes and sailed boats, but his boats always sunk.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Norma June (Walton) Bennett, Children, Diana New of New Castle, Jacquline Bennett of New Castle, Pamela (husband, Steve) Ramsey of New Castle, Wayne (wife, Kittie) Bennett of Rawlins, Ohio, and Kimberly (husband, Allan) Pierce of Spiceland, son-in-law Terry Madison of Mooreland, a special cousin, Larry Webster of East Peoria, IL, who his parents helped raise, his grandchildren: Dennis New, Aaron New, Lisa Madison, Randy Madison, April Kemper, Tiffany Mason, Taylor Ramsey, Brock Ramsey, Katelyn Pierce, and Andrew Pierce, his great-grandchildren: Dakota, Brent, Trevor and Maci Madison, Emilee and Tyler Madison, Shyann New, and Madison and Eleanor Kemper, one niece and four nephews, several cousins, and his special dog, Katie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Clifford Moss in 2013, his daughter, Linda Madison in 2012, a nephew, Steven Moss in 2008, his sister, Lorena Moss in 1994, and a nephew.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Arthur Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Garden. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Henry County Humane Society.
