Garnet "Irene" Shermer

Garnet “Irene” (Sosby) Shermer, age 88, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at The Waters of Muncie. She was born April 6, 1928 in Wayne County, Indiana, to the late Charles J. and Anice Carmen (Schell) Sosby.

She had worked at RMC in Attica, IN for 9 years, and at Henry County Memorial Park for 18 years as Park Ranger and head of maintenance. Irene was a Foster Grandparent for several years, and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in New Castle. She lived in California for 18 years and in New Castle since 1974. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, bingo, and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed the outdoors and especially her pets.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia “Patsy” Willett of New Castle: granddaughters, Sherry, Heather, Erica, Jennifer, Amanda (Wayne) Parks of New Castle, Jaclyn (Rusty) Dailey of New Castle and Jasmin (Josh) Shopp of Muncie; sister, Elma Alcorn of New Castle; great grandchildren, Levi, Garrett and Cody, Clayton, Madison, Russell and Brooklyn, Luna and Veda; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews including Cara Collier of New Castle, who helped care for her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy W. Shermer; four sisters, Beulah, Rusty, Betty Jean, and Gladys; son, Roy Charles Shermer; daughter, Cynthia Massengale, grandson, Dean Patrick Willett; two sons-in-law, Jack Massengale and Ron Willett.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 12 noon until time of service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Humane Society, 11 Midway Dr. New Castle, IN 47362.
