Gerald "Jerry" Summers

October 6, 1935 — February 17, 2018

Gerald “Jerry” Summers, 82, of New Castle, passed away Saturday morning in his home following a long illness. He was born October 6, 1935 in Ashland, a son of the late Quinlan and Florence (Fisher) Summers.

Jerry attended Ashland School and graduated in 1953 from New Castle High School. In his early years, he was a Golden Glove Boxer, was a member of the New Castle Boxing Association. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Ball State University. He began his teaching career at Mt. Summit, where he also coached the baseball team. He then taught seventh grade American History and Social Studies at New Castle his retirement in 1998. Over the years, he was Assistant coach and Athletic Director for numerous teams including 7th grade football and basketball teams, as well as various other youth sports teams. Jerry was an avid golfer.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Jerry was a member and past Post Commander of the American Legion, Post #137, where he also was on the Honor Guard, and proudly participated at many funeral services for veterans over the years.

He is survived by a daughter, Kim Bentley of New Castle; a son, Mark (Michelle) Summers of Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren, Steven Bentley of Charleston, SC, Brooke (Jaron) Hale of New Castle, Sean (Skye) Summers of Orange Park, FL, Colton Summers of Orange Park, FL; four great grandchildren, Owen Hale, Ivy Hale, Aria Summers and Brandon Summers; several special nieces, nephews and numerous life time friendship in the community.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carol in 1999; son, John in 2013, two sisters, Joan White and Patricia Summers; and a brother, Thomas Summers.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in St. Anne Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Legion, Honor Guard, 419 New York Ave., New Castle, IN 47362.
