Jack F. Tweedy

Jack F. Tweedy, born November 16, 1929, passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Legacy in Greenfield surrounded by his family.

Mr. Tweedy graduated from Carthage High school in 1947, and attended Xavier and Indiana Universities, graduating from Indiana University in 1951. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, and was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia and then in Goose Bay, Labrador, where he was the youngest company commander on the base.

Mr. Tweedy was a very dedicated family man, and always especially enjoyed children. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice Hansford Tweedy. They had 4 children, Kimberlee (Dick) Young, Jay Tweedy, and Gray Tweedy all of Indianapolis and Kyle Elizabeth (Keith) Davis of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In addition, he had 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Tweedy was a life-long member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Knightstown. He also belonged to the Carthage Lions Club for over 50 years was a member of the American Legion and was an Eagle Scout.

He was the owner and President of Tweedy Lumber Company, which has been in business since 1908, with locations in Carthage, Knightstown and Rushville, Indiana and opened the The Fishers Do-It Center in Fishers, Indiana in 1989.

Mr. Tweedy served on the Boards of Directors at the Carthage State Bank, Rush County National Bank and the Rush County Hospital. In addition, he served as President of the Indiana State Board of Welfare, appointed by Indiana Governor Roger Branigin.

In the 1950’s, he started the annual Carthage Fall Festival and Parade. With his infectious laugh and congenial manner, he was always able to lure many high school bands to the parade.

Mr. Tweedy was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Ross Tweedy of Carthage, and his sisters, Julia Jane Tweedy of Carthage and Joanne Tweedy Briggeman of Fort Wayne.

He believed that every life should have laughter and purpose. He fulfilled his purpose, which was helping others, and leaves behind a legacy of inspiration for others to do the same.

Public viewing will be from 4-8 PM, Thursday, October 26, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel.

The family will hold a private service at a later time. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Saint Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
