James Coffey, 93, formerly of New Castle, passed away January 18, 2018, in West Lafayette. He was born in Monticello, KY on December 28, 1924, the son of the late Albert and Helen Coffey.
James is survived by Mae, his wife of 72 years, children, Faye (Wayne) Nelms of North Carolina, Gail (Mike) Baldwin of Lafayette, Ray (Trish) Coffey of Yorktown, and Christa Coffey of Lafayette; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; daughters in law, Judy Coffey of Kokomo and Carolyn Coffey of Middletown.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Ron Coffey and Wayne Coffey, and two grandsons, Jon Hyatt and Jeremy Coffey.
He served in the Army during World War II from June 1943 to September 1945, inducted into the 45th Infantry Division. Among his medals are the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star, and a Sharp Shooter Badge. While serving, he started writing with Mae (Teenie) Hatfield of Burnside, KY, and they married in January 1946.
James and Mae moved to New Castle in 1947. He began working at Chrysler with his Uncle Dewey, and retired in 1978 after 30 years of service. In the 1950’s, they purchased a 5-acre section and built a house on 300 South in New Castle and lived there until October 2012. James loved and served The Lord for more than sixty years.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Services will start at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Batson Cemetery.
