Joseph W. “Joey” Tompkins, 68, of Knightstown, passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born October 14, 1949 in Wilkinson, a son of the late Carlie and Dolly (Whitt) Tompkins.
Joey retired from Delphi Automotive in 2006 after 34 years of service. He was also a policeman for Knightstown and Kennard from 1978-1992. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a Green Beret. Joey was a member of the Knightstown American Legion Post 152, UAW 662 and attended Kennard Friends Church. He was a fan of NASCAR, professional football and basketball. He enjoyed playing guitar, reading the Bible, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judy (Chew) Tompkins of Knightstown; children, Jenny (Wayne) Dick, Joseph R. Tompkins and Lance Tompkins all of Knightstown; three grandchildren, Carlie, Clarissa and Hope; a brother, Danny (Melinda) Tompkins of Kennard; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Beth Tompkins.
Visitation will be from 3-7 PM Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM Thursday with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. A graveside service will be at 2:00 PM Friday at Glen Cove Cemetery with Bishop Dan Tompkins officiating. Military rites will be conducted by a contingent of the U.S. Army and the Knightstown American Legion Post 152.
