Joy June Luellen

June 15, 1928 — March 26, 2015

Joy June Luellen, age 86, of Mooreland, passed away Thursday evening, March 26, 2015 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana after suffering a massive stroke at home. God saw her very tired and good health again was not to be, so in His infinite love, He beckoned “Come to me.”

June was born in Henry County, June 15, 1928, the daughter of the late James and Eva (Reece) Houser. She had lived in the Mooreland area all her life and graduated from Mooreland High School in 1946. She married Marvin Luellen, also of Mooreland, July 10, 1948. They had lived in the farm home they had built since 1959.

June was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her family and was the happiest and proudest when they could all be home. She loved going to their school and sports activities.

June had served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, Bible school teacher and/or director among others. She volunteered at different nursing homes and had received the nursing home volunteer of the year recognition. June had said it was a blessing to see the joy and smiles one could bring to the faces of the residents. She was a member of the Wilbur Wright Birthplace Preservation Society where she enjoyed putting together displays for the enjoyment of the visitors. She had served as treasurer and on the Board of Directors. She had also served as treasurer of the family owned Luellen Farms, Inc.

She and her husband were honored with the Lieutenant Governor Kernan’s Hospitality Award. They also received a Distinguished Hoosier award from Governor Mitch Daniels.

She was a 50 plus year member of the South Christian Church in Mooreland and attended the New Testament Church of Christ in Hagerstown.

Surviving June is her husband of 66 years, Marvin Luellen of Mooreland; sons, Randy (Jana) Luellen of Mooreland and Kerry (Pam) Luellen of Apopka, FL; daughters, Brenda (David) Day of Noblesville, IN and Julie (Joe) Hale of Hagerstown, IN; grandchildren, Amanda (Ted) Jester of New Castle, Ryan (Ashley) Luellen of Millville, IN, Nathaniel (Erin) Day of Greenfield, IN, Anna (Ryan) Dilger of Champaign, IL, Eric (Amy) Day of Eugene, OR, Jaron (Brooke) Hale of New Castle, Jay (Abby) Hale of Mooreland, IN, Devon Luellen of Tampa, FL, Emily Luellen of Maitland, FL; seventeen great grandchildren, Wyatt and Cecily Jester, Mason, Sara, Daniel and Jasmine Luellen, Gavin Anderson, Thomas, Noah and Christian Day, Allison Joy and Joshua Dilger, Colby Day, Jaxon, Jonah and Jace Hale and Owen Hale; sister, Dorothy Knotts of New Castle; sister-in-law, Betty Houser of New Castle; many special and wonderful nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by a precious granddaughter, Jessica Joy Hale in 2002; sisters, Thelma (Houser) Knotts and Marjorie (Houser) Wantz; brothers, Eugene Houser and Don Houser; brothers-in-law, Lewis Knotts and Mefford Knotts and Kenneth Wantz; sister-in-law, Wilma (Vores) Houser.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Paul Gearhardt and Rod Beheler officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2015 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the New Testament Church of Christ, 752 W. Main St., Hagerstown, IN 47346.
