Joyce Geitz

Joyce Geitz passed away at Glen Oaks Health Campus on Thursday, May 18, 2017. She was born on May 22, 1929 in Redwood, VA to Claude L. and Delma (Simms) Lumsden.

Joyce graduated with a B.A in Education from James Madison College in Virginia where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and Alpha Sigma Tau Social Sorority. She taught school in Norfolk, Virginia.
She married Lt. J.G. Kenneth Lloyd Geitz on July 2, 1952 at Rocky Mount, Virginia. For the next 25 years she moved her family 18 times on the East Coast, West Coast, Wisconsin, Texas, Okinawa, Hawaii, and Bermuda. Capt. Geitz retired in 1975 and they lived in Valparaiso, Indiana until 2003 when they moved to New Castle.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Castle, Daughters of the American Revolution, P.E.O. Sisterhood (Chapter CG), and the Sorosis Literary Club.

She is survived by her son, Edward Geitz of Farmville, VA; daughter, Mary (Todd) Willis of Springport; a brother, Robert (Karen) Lumsden of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Sam and Cate Willis of Springport, Cori (Jeff) Cannon and Bobby Lantz; one great grandchild; nieces, Ann Stewart and Molly Martin, and a nephew, Luke Lumsden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Kenneth Geitz, USN Ret.; a daughter, Diane Geitz Lantz; brother, Russell Lumsden, and a sister, Edith Goggin.

Services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to United Methodist Women, c/o First United Methodist Church, 1324 Church St., New Castle, IN 47362, or the donor’s choice.
