Kirsten "Kris" Jondahl Haakonsen Olson, 94, passed away April 19, 2014 at the Heritage House, New Castle, Indiana. She was born February 17, 1920 in Stavanger, Norway to the late Hans and Alma Hansen Haakonsen.
She came to the United States in 1923 growing up in the New England area. Kris graduated in 1938 with honors from Punchard High School, Andover, MA. She worked as an interpreter (fluent in several languages) and was purchasing agent for Olson Marine Supplies in New York City until her husband, Herbert Edward Olson, Sr. death in 1948. They were married January 1, 1943 in Englewood, NJ. In 1990, Kris moved to New Castle, Indiana to be near her family.
She was an avid reader, played the accordion and violin, enjoyed flower gardening, rug braiding (which she taught), needlework and sewing, cooking, golfing, boating and flying (having earned her private pilots license along with her husband). Kris was an exceptional skier, having skied throughout the United States, Canada and European Alps. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Hospice volunteer. For the past 2 years, she resided at Heritage House Nursing Home.
Kris is survived by her son, Herb (wife, Maren) Olson, Jr.; two grandsons, Herb Olson III and Leif (wife, Amanda) Olson; two great granddaughters, Bailey and Erika Olson all of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Edward Olson, Sr.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Marie Haakonsen Larson (Earl), Solveig Haakonsen Morehouse (Ray), Elizabeth Haakonsen Abbott (John).
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. April 27, 2014 following the Sunday worship service at the Cadiz Christian Church. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Desert Island, ME.
