Manda L. Roland

February 12, 1929 — July 21, 2017

Manda L. (Mix) Roland, 88, of Knightstown passed from this life to her heavenly home from Heritage House in New Castle, Indiana on July 21, 2017. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a kind and caring presence to all who was blessed to know her. She will be sadly missed by her loving family and remembered for her legacy of character and faith. She was the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Corine (Conrad) Mix. Her marriage to Wilfred Roland took place in 1946 and he preceded her in death in February of 2006.

Manda was born into a pioneering family on February 12, 1929 in the small river town of Leavenworth, Indiana. Her heritage and rich ancestry line reaches back to England and France to the House of Plantagenet. The Plantagenet Kings and a royal dynasty including Fulk V. Count of Anjou King of Jerusalem, Henry II King of England to the present day royal family.

Growing up during the Great Depression, Manda spoke of hard times with food being very scarce. However, at just the right time, their dog would bring a rabbit to their back porch that fed the family. At Christmas, she and her siblings would receive an apple and an orange in their stockings and were happy to receive them. One of her childhood chores was to milk the cows by hand before school each day.

Manda and her husband, Wilfred, met as teenagers and it was love at first site. Willy would ride his bicycle from Knightstown to Wilkinson to see her, as she sat roadside eagerly awaiting his arrival. Her first place of employment was at Kresges’ Department Store in New Castle, where she rode the train home daily. She eventually retired from Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield as a Ward Clerk.

Manda loved her children and grandchildren very much. Special times for her were family cookouts and swimming in her pool. An excellent cook, she enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas with her family. Trying to fit forty-nine plus family members in her home on Christmas Eve was a good challenge. She also loved watching her grandchildren give their requests to Santa when he arrived on the fire truck each year.

Manda was a member of By His Grace Charlottesville Worship Center. The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren are not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith. This quote from Billy Graham exemplified Manda’s life. She had an unwavering faith in her God. Her children and grandchildren were greatly influenced by her great legacy that she left for them.

Four generations survive her. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Cheryl Cassidy, Cindy (Paul) Loveall and Teresa Manning of Knightstown; sons, Mark (Mary) Roland and Jeff Roland of Greenfield. Grandchildren; Ron (Rhonda) Mills, Rick (Brandy) Mills, Melissa (Joe) Peggs, Ryan (Serena) Loveall, Josh and Travis Roland, Brooke Wood, Brandi Vicars, Tyler Manning, Clayton, Corey and Caleb Roland. 19 great grandchildren; Jordan, Jared, Korbyn, Roland and Ryland Mills, Devin and Dillon Silver, Amanda (Jayden) Elkins, Drake Peggs, Brittany (Craig) Denney, Kelsey Fisher, Brock and Brooklyn Loveall, Kendal and Will Roland, Macey and Kennedy Vicars, Rilee and Austin Roland; 2 great-great grandchildren, Bronwynn Denney, Jaxon Elkins; sisters, Pat (Don) Winchester of Kokomo.

In addition to her parents, Manda was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wilfred Roland; one son, James Edward Roland; three grandsons, Rob Mills, Shane Loveall, Derek Roland; one great grandson, Cameron Wood; son in law, Ron Cassidy; four brothers, Sherman Malcolm, Samuel A. Jr., Julian (Buck) and Tom Mix; one sister, Kathryn (Mix) Beatty.
