Rodger K Smith

Rodger K. Smith, age 75, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born June 6, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to the late J. Shreve and Audrey Mae (Morrison) Smith.

He was a graduate of Alliance High School, in Alliance, Ohio in 1958. Rodger was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1958-1962. He was employed at Newark Air Force Base in Newark, Ohio and Crane Naval Base from 1964-1992 where he retired from the service. He then worked for Comarco as a contractor and Bloomington Transit in Bloomington, Indiana, also worked as a correctional officer at GEO in New Castle for six years. He was a member of Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis and attended First Friends Meeting in New Castle. He enjoyed making models of ships, old movies, camping, canoeing and loved his dogs.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty Lee (Maloney) Smith; three children, Kimberly Jo Smith of Indianapolis, R. Lee (Nancy) Smith of Lincoln, NE and Mindy (Jay) Vincent of New Castle; four grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Saathoff, Laura Lee Smith, Ashley Vincent and Dusty Vincent; two great grandchildren, Caden and Beckett Saathoff.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 27, 2015 at First Friends Meeting with Pastors Jay Vincent and Rick Schoeff officiating. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Humane Society, 11 Midway Dr., New Castle, IN 47362. Military Rites will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion. Arrangements are entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle.
