Thomas Alan Hiner

July 13, 1964 — February 23, 2018

Thomas Alan Hiner, 53, of New Castle passed away Friday, February 23, 2018. He was born July 13, 1964 in New Castle to John and Alice (Coy) Hiner.

Tom was a graduate of Walter P. Chrysler High School where he was part of the AV Club. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He worked at Exponent Publishing, C.S. Kern, and Community Printing. He worked in the printing industry for many years and then went to work doing what he had always wanted to do since he was young: working at CSX Railroad as a conductor.

Tom was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Crescen Lodge, having joined on February 2, 1982. He became Past Chancellor on December 31, 1989, and a member of Grand Lodge on March 7, 1990. Tom loved helping with their annual Christmas parade. He was instrumental in the founding and operation of the annual Kris Kringle 4 Mile Run and 3 Mile Walk, serving as race director through the 2017 event and participating until his health prevented it, and founded the “Twin Sisters” running event. He actively participated in the annual fireworks stand for the lodge. Tom was also a member of Al Hilal Temple 33, DOKK, where he formerly portrayed Mokanna.

Tom was very active in the community and helped build the “Fun Park” at Baker Park. He was also a member of the Henry County Runners Association, American Legion Post #13, Center for Inquiry, and the Railway Preservation Society. Tom enjoyed weather forecasting and anything about the weather; NASA and space, all kinds of history especially military history, and the Greenway Trail. Tom was always learning new things and valued education and logical thinking.

Tom meant the world to his mother, Alice. She thought he was the most special person.

Tom is survived by his mother, Alice Hiner of New Castle; children, Chris (Tiffany) Hiner of Muncie, Chelsi (Zach) Bookout of Losantville; grandchildren, Dalylah and Cooper Hiner; special friend, Jeanne Ann Duncan of New Castle; grand-puppies, Nirah and Lafwanda; and many other special friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, John Hiner; paternal grandparents, Sanger Hiner and Isalene Henry; maternal grandparents, Herchel E. and Vera (Pentecost) Coy.
