Viola May Melton

January 25, 1923 — October 8, 2017

New Castle, IN. – Viola May Melton, 94, was called home to be with her Lord on October 8, 2017. Viola was born in Randolph County on January 25, 1923 to the late Delma and Mabel Shaffer. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim Melton, granddaughter Jami (Sissy) Burge, brother Kennard Shaffer, and brother Harley Shaffer.

Viola is survived by her children, Jerry (Sherry) Fouts, Ronnie (Helen) Fouts, Susie (David) Burge, Rick (Linda) Fouts, 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, sisters Shirley Fisher and Eileen Helm.

Viola lived life to the fullest and touched many lives along the way. The way she lived her life defined the true beauty of the person she was. She loved to travel and visited every state except Alaska and Hawaii. She loved to collect spoons from each state. Her biggest love besides her family and friends was the outdoors and having her hands in the dirt. She had a green thumb out of this world. Her flower beds were admired by many. She could take a plant that looked like a “Charlie Brown Christmas tree” and turn it into a bountiful plant. She was always giving starts from her plants to family and friends to grow in their flower beds. If you were lucky enough you may have received one of her beautiful yard ornaments that she made out of mosaic glass. Her memory lives on in many of her loved ones flower beds. When Viola wasn’t planting or tending to her flowers, she was making crafts. She loved to make crafts for her family and friends. She enjoyed making her delicious jams, scrapbooking, watching beautiful birds (cardinals were her favorite), collecting teapots, going out to eat and shopping with her friends. She was known for loving her “pups” throughout the years. The family joke was how we all wished we were one of her dogs. They were treated like royalty and ate like kings.

Viola was a strong woman who loved life, loved her family and her friends. Throughout life she graciously would close one chapter and move to the next chapter. Although her story has come to an end on this Earth; a new chapter begins in her eternal life as she meets Jesus with that beautiful smile that makes her blue eyes sparkle.

The family would like to give a special Thank You to Viola’s friends: Sharon Bertram, Sherry Schmidt, Betty Smucker, Karen Constant, and Ruby Kalk. You were all very dear to her and she was blessed to have such special friends that made her days brighter.

Special Thank You to all the staff at I.U. Ball Memorial Hospital, especially the Hospice staff on the 5th floor, for taking such great care of Viola during her last days. Our family could feel the love and compassion that you had for our sweet Viola.
