William Douglas “Doug” Jackson, 96, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Hickory Creek in New Castle. He was born October 9, 1921 in Rush County, a son of James Richard and Rena Mae (Reed) Jackson.
Doug married the love of his life, Ruth Estell on May 1, 1948. She passed away in February of 2013. Doug enlisted in the Army in August, 1942 and serviced until his Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant in September, 1945. He received the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal of WWII. Doug was a lifelong farmer and a driver for the Oakville elevator. He was also a self-employed auctioneer and worked at the Knightstown Sale Barn.
He spent the last 8 years in the Hickory Creek of New Castle nursing home. During most of this time he was the roommate of Tim Howe, who provided an invaluable friendship for both Doug and his family.
Doug will be missed by his step-son, Gary Williams; grandson, H.C. (Amanda) Williams; great grandchildren, Joseph Katzmarek, Alexander Williams, Emma Williams and Jackson Williams; a brother, Phillip Jackson of Knightstown; nieces, Gayle (Jeff) Cates and Cindy (Tom) Koontz; and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Katheryn Ingram; brothers, Vester Jackson and Charles Jackson, Jr.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Knightstown American Legion Post #152 and contingents from the U.S. Army. Visitation will be from 11 AM until time of the service.
