Alice M. Burke

April 10, 1932 — February 12, 2021

Alice “Helen” May (Girdley) Burke, 88, New Castle, Indiana passed away at 12:58 A.M. Friday, February 12, 2021 in Houston, Texas peacefully in the comfort of her family. She was born April 11, 1932 in Crossville (Wilder, Fentress County), Tennessee to Allie May (Stephens) Girdley- Sherlock and Oscar Mitchell Girdley.

Helen attended New Castle Chrysler High School in New Castle, IN and spent most of her life residing in New Castle. Later splitting her time with late husband between Texas and Indiana prior to moving permanently to Texas the remaining years of her life.

She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She loved her family and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them and her beloved pets. She loved quilting and finally stopped long beyond being able to manage threading the needle. Always remembering her roots, she instilled an honest appreciation of life, love, hardships and gratefulness and never stopped teaching this to her family and friends in the way she shined and lived life.

She loved to cook, never knew anyone to be a stranger, always had a smile to give with her bright eyes, all a perfect fit for the years of working at the deli counter for Eaton’s Market.

In addition to her Parents and Grandmother Martha Stephens, she was preceded in passing by Husband, Robert “Bob” Burke and Sisters, Dorothy Marie Morris, Josephine “Josie” Novella Edwards and Betty Ruth Dobbins.

Forever in the hearts of her surviving family including the following:
Three Son’s; Thomas “Tom” Burke (Bonnie Birkel) of Greers Ferry, Arkansas, John (Rae Etta “Sis”) Burke of Plainfield, Indiana and Ron (Mary) Burke of New Castle, Indiana. Six Grandchildren: Teresa Burke (Howard Smith) of Houston, Texas and Tiffany (Jim) Bertrand of Malvern, Pennsylvania, Daughters of Tom Burke and first wife Teresa (Justice) Shotts; Angela (Derek) Clay of Plainfield, Indiana and John “J.R.” (Hannah) Burke of Orange Park, Florida, Daughter and Son of John and Rae Etta “Sis” Burke; Brandon Burke and Travis Burke both of New Castle, Indiana, Son’s of Ron and Mary Burke. Eleven Great Grand Children: John Phillip “Phillip” (Maddie), Grant, Garrison, Cameron, Hannah, Laney, Isaiah, Hunter, Aleha, Alyssa and Lexy. Along with several nieces and nephews.

Helen’s viewing will be held at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, Indiana followed by burial in South Mound Cemetery – West Lawn Addition. Her final resting place will be beside late husband, where they may rest peacefully together once again.

Due to COVID-19 Pandemic and concern for everyone’s health, a private viewing and graveside burial ceremony is being held for the attendance of immediate family members only on February 26, 2021.

The family appreciates your condolences and acknowledges the desire individuals have to pay respects along with having the ability to grieve with those they care about. Therefore, we are planning a larger Memorial Service at a future, TBD time and date. Allowing all of those unable to attend.

The family thanks you for respectfully honoring the decision to make Helen’s funeral private due to circumstances.

Flowers may be sent to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, Indiana.
