Altie Colene Wallace

March 9, 1935 — February 15, 2020

Altie Colene Wallace, 84, of Spiceland, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 in her home after being in failing health for the past year. She was born March 9, 1935 in Hegira (Clinton County), Kentucky, a daughter of the late Herbert G. and Abbie (Sells) Hoots.

Colene retired from Tri Jr.-Sr. High School, following over 20 years of service in the food service department. An avid gardener, she and her husband John enjoyed growing and canning vegetables, and were known in the Spiceland community for the roadside vegetable stand. She also loved flower gardening, and spent a lot of time outside, especially on her back porch, watching the hummingbirds. Trips to the orchard to pick apples in the fall was an annual favorite. A great southern cook, she did it well and was admired by her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she adored. When she was in good health, she attended the Greensboro Church of the Nazarene.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Donnie (Paulette) Wallace of Spiceland; two daughters, Debbie (Dan) Jones of Clarkston, MI and Dana (Jim) Pennington of White Lake, MI; grandchildren, Todd (April) Wallace of Knightstown, Kim (Jeremy) Powers of Knightstown, Adam (Shannan) Wallace of Cambridge City, Alison (Adam) Kern of Clarkston, MI, Justin (Trina) Jones of Lake Wylie, SC, Ben (Tina) Pennington of Lakes Angelus, MI, and Taylor Pennington (Tyler Hull) of Lansing, MI; great grandchildren, Neriah (Taylor) Smith, Addy Edwards, Caden Powers, Kate Wallace, Claire Wallace, Mason Hicks, Emma Hicks, Ellie Hicks, Eli Kern, Ethan Kern, Evan Kern, Ella Kern, and Emma Kern, Dylan White, and two more on the way; a great-great granddaughter, Marren Smith. Also, a sister, Wanda Taylor of Louisville, KY, and a sister-in-law, Carla Hoots of New Castle; many nieces and nephews, and a host of close friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Wallace, a son, Terry Wallace; sisters, Vera Wallace, Vida Jennings, Opal Martin, and Doris Jean Hoots; brothers, Wayman, Alvis, Clifford, J.R., and Harold Hoots.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Mark Herbkersman officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2010 at the funeral home.
