Barbara A. Messick

June 14, 1933 — March 26, 2020

Barbara A. Messick, 86, of Greenwood and formerly of New Castle, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2020 at The Hearth at Stones Crossing in Greenwood. She was born June 14, 1933 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Lloyd and L. Madge (Ratz) McMillan. Growing up, Barbara cherished her dad and had many fond memories of her time with him hunting, fishing, and singing along while he played his guitar.

A 1951 graduate of New Castle High School, she had worked at Modernfold Doors, Best Lock Corporation, and then retired from Naval Avionics Center in the Personnel Office. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Greenwood.

Barbara loved the fact that her birthday was on Flag Day; she was very patriotic and proudly displayed the American flag. She attended church, loved Jesus, and enjoyed scripture and hymns. The Christian cross was sacred to her. Barbara loved traveling to see lighthouses, especially in Michigan. Her travels also included New Zealand, Hawaii, Florida, North Carolina, and the American West. She enjoyed socializing, laughing with her friends, and bringing joy to others. Her warmth and gentleness touched everyone’s soul.

As a homemaker, she enjoyed flowers, gardening and canning. Above all, Barbara’s passion and purpose was her family. Her children and grandchildren, especially her grandson Trevor were her main focus in everyday life.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 68 years, Lonnie D. Messick, Jr. of Greenwood, whom she married on June 23, 1951; two sons, Kenneth A. (Kay) Messick of The Villages, FL and Carey L. Messick of Bargersville; a daughter, Patricia A. Duncan of Greenwood; two grandsons, Scott D. (Erin) Messick of Fishers and Trevor S. Duncan of Greenwood; two great-granddaughters; a brother-in-law, William Bledsoe of New Castle; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Due to the rapidly increasing COVID-19 concerns and the Messick family wanting everyone to be safe and stay healthy, Barbara’s service will be held privately at 12 noon Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Chaplain Charlie Sawyer officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. **Please utilize the online condolence option and our Hugs from Home program, both available at www.hinsey-brown.com **
