Charles Henry Darling, 94, of Kennard, passed away and entered the Kingdom of heaven to be with his Lord and Savior April 14, 2019. He was born to the late Rodney Harold and Elizabeth Ruth (Graham) Darling, in Cadiz, Indiana.
Charles attended Cadiz and Kennard Schools. He was a veteran of WWII, joining the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in Italy and fought in the battles of Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and PO Valley. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon, 4 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct medal, Distinguished Unit Citation and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He married Bertie Pearl Spears on September 12, 1946 and they have three sons. He worked at Knightstown Elevator for 43 years, from 1947-1990.
Charles was a member of Greensboro Church of the Nazarene for 61 years and rang the church bell proudly for most of that time. He lived and raised his family in Kennard for 58 years. He enjoyed going to church, reading his Bible, visiting people, and loved doing wood crafts. In his younger years he enjoyed rabbit hunting. He also had an old long barrel shotgun he would let people shoot and laugh when it knocked them backwards.
Left to cherish Charles’ memory is Bertie, his wife of 73 years; three sons, Gerald (Darlene) Darling, Mack (Sharon) Darling and Danny (Maria) Darling; 15 grandchildren, many, many great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his sister, Thelma Irene Darling True, brother, Raymond Darling, nephew, Larry Wayne Darling who was killed in Viet Nam; niece, Diana Sue Akers.
A life well lived with the utmost honesty, honor and obedience to God. Well done Dad!
Services will be at 12:00 PM Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Pastors Randy Perry and Anthony Darling officiating. Military rites will be conducted by U.S. Army and Knightstown American Legion Post #152. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service.
