Christopher "Matt" Matthew Poer

Christopher Matthew “Matt” Poer 46, of Rhode Island and formerly of New Castle passed away April 12, 2018. He was born September 4, 1971 in New Castle.
Matt was a 1990 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School where he played football. He then went on and attended Ball State University before starting a career with the U.S. Army. He later received his Masters Degree from Framingham State University. Matt was dedicated to the service of his country and had served multiple tours overseas, including two missions in both Afghanistan and Iraq. He was a Staff Sergeant and Green Beret of the 5th Special Forces Group in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroic achievements.
After retirement, Matt worked for Blackwater Protection guarding diplomats in foreign countries. He also loved the beach, helping people, the outdoors, and was a fitness enthusiast, participating in many 5K’s and triathlons.
Matt is survived by his children, Makensie Jane and Gavin Matthew; parents, Doug and Sherry Poer of New Castle; sister, Ashley Poer of Florida; maternal grandmother, Betty Cline of New Castle; paternal grandmother, Jean Poer of New Castle; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ralph Cline; paternal grandfather, Donald Poer; his fellow service men and women; and his service dog, Dano.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
