Dailey Owen Turner

August 22, 1957 — September 20, 2018

SMS Dailey Owen Turner, aged 61, died September 20th, 2018, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia after an extended illness.

Owen was born August 22, 1957 in San Antonio, TX, joining his sister, Therese, as the second child and only son of MSG, Retired Theodore & Glenda F Turner. He was especially proud of the fact that his extended family had served in various branches of the military and growing up a military dependent, molded and shaped his character such that serving in the military himself became his lifelong passion. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1976 after graduating High School in 1975.

His Air Force career as both an active duty member and as a traditional reservist spanned more than 34 years. During that time, his exceptional leadership and extensive job knowledge, his commitment to service and extreme dedication to duty, and his meticulous oversight earned him recognition as the backbone of his units. As a result he received many decorations for his actions. Of particular note are his AF Achievement Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals. He was deployed to Qatar during the Iraq war. He was still serving on active duty stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling at the time of his death.

His dedication, discipline, patriotism and sense of duty extended to his off-duty life as well. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, embodying their spirit of service, not self, in supporting and honoring the sacrifices of those who serve by volunteering his leadership skills on behalf of veterans’ and service members’ interests. He considered it both a privilege and his duty to ride in motorcycle brigades honoring the lives of fallen veterans and routinely did so.

Although he moved around a lot as a child and friends came and went, the one constant in his life was his tightly-knit family. Family was important to Owen and he tried to show that in his love for his. He enjoyed big family gatherings, especially around the holidays. He loved the stories, the traditions, the pumpkin pie slivering. He loved life on his Harley and the adventurous sense of freedom riding gave him. He admired his sons and their accomplishments and spoke of them with pride.

His sense of humor and infectious laughter will be missed by the family he leaves behind: his wife, Beverly Neeland Turner, and step-daughter, Talia Neeland; his sons and grandsons, Erich James (Silvana and grandson Logan) Turner and Jon Michael (Cathy and grandsons, Forest and Sage) Turner; his mother, Glenda Clark Turner, and sister, Glenda Therese McKenzie (Jack); uncles and aunts, Bob and Sue Turner, Jerry and Lavon Sayre, Jim and Jean Shepherd and Linda Turner; nephew, Dan Atwater; parents-in-law, Bob and Nancy Meyer and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and longtime confidant, Theodore ‘Ted’ Turner; grandparents, Dailey and Ada Turner; grandparents, Owen Lester and Eura Clark; aunts, Mildred Turner and Margie Turner Shepherd and uncles, George Ed Turner and Ronnie Turner.
