Donald J. Tichenor, 82, of New Castle went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Glen Oaks Health Campus following a struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He has found the ultimate healing and he suffers no more. Don was born October 16, 1938 in New Castle, a son of the late Silas Conrad and Thelma (Reeves) Tichenor.
A 1956 graduate of New Castle High School, Don had a robust desire to work. This, coupled with his entrepreneurial spirit, led him to many opportunities in the business world. As a strong leader, he was well organized and always kept integrity and honesty foremost in his business practices. Owning and operating vending companies, appraising real estate, renovating homes and manufacturing modular classrooms were some of his endeavors.
Always motivated, Don’s favorite opportunity was his service to the city of New Castle. Under four administrations; Mayors Boles, Nipp, Small and York, Don served as Cemetery Superintendent, Director of Public Works and consultant. In addition, he served on several city, county and community boards.
He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of New Castle where he had served as a trustee and on various financial committees. He loved the Lord and treasured time with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 62 years, whom he married February 14, 1959, Deanna (Ritchie) Tichenor of New Castle; two daughters, Lisa (Larry) Abrams of New Castle and Amy (William) Harper of Indianapolis; his mother-in-law, Cathern Hennemann of New Castle; a sister-in-law, Billie Jean Tichenor and a niece, Deborah Ramsgard, both of San Luis Obispo, CA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. H. Duane Tichenor (and wife Rita) and Robert Tichenor; a niece, Donna Jeanne Tichenor-Shutts.
Due to safety concerns related to Covid-19, funeral services will be private at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Jerry Ingalls officiating. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to First Baptist Church, 709 S. Memorial Dr., New Castle, IN 47362 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
