Edna Poore

May 15, 1926 — March 19, 2019

Edna Davis Poore passed away in her home in Middletown, Indiana on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. She was 92 years, 7 months, and four days old.

Edna was born in August 15, 1926, in the hills of Keno, Pulaski County, Kentucky. She was the 9th of 10 living children born to William Henry Davis (March 28, 1886 - December 7, 1962) and Lydia Emerine Morrow (March 16, 1888 - October 30, 1980), both of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Her siblings included Othel (1908-1982), Arnold (1910-1981), Elbert (1912-1984), Georgia (1915-1982), Margaret (1917-2012), Ruby (1919-2002), Elsie (1922-1955), Junior (1923-1982), and Esther (1928-1995). Edna grew up surrounded by her immediate and extended family, of whom she always held in high regard.

In 1942, at the age of 16, Edna left home and moved to New Castle, Indiana, to work in the factories that were supporting the war effort. During World War II, women across the nation flooded such factories, filling roles formerly granted only to men, forever shifting the tide of the workforce. Edna was one of those Rosie the Riveter women, though she never saw that as anything special about herself; she simply saw it as doing her part.

During their breaks at the factory, the ladies would work on craft projects - sewing, crocheting, embroidery, beading - this is something that stayed with Edna through the years and something she shared with her family. Her beaded ornaments decorate our trees every holiday season and her quilts and afghans are found throughout our homes, a cozy reminder of her love for us. Many of her family members also share her love for crafts and will continue to pass these skills through the generations.

In 1955 she married Delmar Joseph Poore (September 26, 1920 - July 25, 1999), a Navy man from Byrdstown, Tennessee. They moved onto a farm in Sulphur Springs, Indiana; where they went on to have four children: Oscar William (1956), Portia Faye (1957), Michael Dennis (1958), and Nancy Sue (1960).

In 1972, at age 16, Oscar died in an accident. He is forever missed.

Edna worked at the Delco-Remy factory until her retirement. She cared for her beloved husband Delmar in his waning years until his death in 1999. They were married for 44 years.

Edna is survived by three children: Faye Buck (husband William Buck), Nancy Fletcher, and Mike Poore; six grandchildren: Amber Beaman Batzloff (husband Gary Batzloff), Crystal Beaman Barker (husband Andy Barker), Zebediah Poore, Shenna Fletcher, Lydia Buck, and Zane Poore, a great-grandchild, great-grandchild on-the-way, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. We’ll miss Edna’s blue eyes and resilient spirit forever.
