Emogene Bowers, 93, passed from this life to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Henry Community Health in New Castle while surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 3, 1924 in Slickford, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Minford and Bonnie (Carter) Dishman.
Emogene accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and remained a faithful servant all her life. She was an active member of the First Assembly of God church for many years where she taught Sunday School, greeted everyone with a smile, served on several church committees and held various offices in the Women’s Ministries. More recently she attended Grace Baptist Church as long as her health allowed.
She retired from Western Electric in 1979 after 25 years of service. In her younger days, she loved to walk, was an avid bowler who bowled into her late 80’s, working in her flowers, and cooking big family dinners for her family. Some of her specialties being fried chicken, fried potatoes, chicken and dumplings and coconut cream pie. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling, playing dominos and bingo, watching the Colts and Pacer games, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. More than anything Emogene was a wonderful mother and grandmother who sacrificed her own needs for those of her children and grandchildren throughout her life. She will be missed so much and her family feels very blessed to have had her for their mother and grandmother for so many years. She will live in their hearts forever.
Emogene is survived by her children, Jim (Vivian Armantrout) Upchurch, Darlene (Rex) Thompson-Criswell, and Connie Privett, all of New Castle; daughter-in-law, Cathy (Ed) Stevenson, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Scott (Todd Williams) Upchurch, Indianapolis, Lisa (Butch) Davis, Fountaintown, Jim (Shannon) Upchurch, Clinton, Utah LeeAnn (Mike Pollitt) Upchurch, Spiceland, Gene Thompson, New Castle; Heather Moles, New Castle, and Heith (Stephanie) Moles, Greenfield; 12 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Wanda Benson, New Castle; several stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special long-time friends, Jeff and Jewel Mendenhall.
