Gene Douglas “Doug” Peyton, 83, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday in his home following an extended illness. He was born January 30, 1936 in New Castle to the late Creston and Olive Louise (Chambers) Peyton.
Doug served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle in 2000, where he was a furnace repairman. He lived most of his life in New Castle, where he had attended Southside Church of the Nazarene, was very active in prison ministry, and the Optimist Club. In the past, Doug coached several youth baseball and basketball leagues. A dedicated community volunteer, he enjoyed volunteering at the Christian Love Help Center, Salvation Army, Westminster Community Center, and God’s Pocket Food and Clothing Pantry in Ft. Myers, FL. While in Greenfield, he attended the First Church of God.
An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and gem stone finding. But most of all, he was a follower of Jesus Christ.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Carol Griner-Peyton of Greenfield; a son, Brian (Lori) Peyton of Knightstown, grandson, Chase Peyton and granddaughter, Rachel Peyton; daughter, Cindy Peyton (Mike Edwards) of Rushville, grandson, Josh Peyton and granddaughter, Bessie Peyton; grandson, David (Tiffany) Stone of New Castle; step grandson, Zac (Amanda) Sumpter of Sellersberg, IN; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Dorthea Peyton Porter of Seal Beach, CA , a brother, Danny (Pat) Peyton of Springport; step daughters, Davetta Stone of New Castle; Shirley (Erick) Raaen of Noblesville and their children, Kate Raaen, Alex Raaen, and Megan Springer; stepson, Randy Griner of Greenfield.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Othel (0dum) Peyton; son, Timothy Allen Peyton; step daughter, Karen Sumpter, and stepson, Mike (Renee) Sumpter; grandson, Kenneth Wayne Peyton.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Chris Braschler and Brian Peyton officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition on Friday, July 12, 2019.
