George F. Solomon

November 1, 1920 — January 23, 2019

George F. Solomon, 98, received the ultimate victory when he entered the gates of Heaven on January 23, 2019. George was born on November 1, 1920 in New Castle the son of Will and Ethel (Johnson) Solomon.

One of six children, George lived a life serving the Lord. He came to know Jesus at an early age and grew his faith while attending the First Church of the Nazarene. George’s love for the Lord was very evident in his life; he was a servant to our Lord serving in many roles in his church. He was a Sunday School teacher, board member for over 40 years, lawn keeper, repairman, he even built the church family center in 1989. George received the Distinguished Service Award given in the Church of the Nazarene as well. He was proud to be a child of God and shared that faith and love with anyone he met, as well as his family.

George is survived by a son, Rev. Bryan (Rosie) Solomon of North Vernon; a daughter, Marta (Rusty) Davis of New Castle; grandchildren, Barbee Solomon of Bloomington, George Wesley (Helen) Solomon of Columbus, Garon (Amber) Davis of New Castle, Kirk (Bethany) Davis of New Castle, Christy (Bryan) Callon of Nashville; great grandchildren, Andrea Marsh, Will and Evan Satterfield, Everleigh Solomon, Bryant and Evan Callon, and Solomon Davis, whose name was given in honor of our beloved George; great-great grandchild, Zoey Callon; step daughters, Carolyn Toth and Janet Hedrick. He also has one surviving brother, Phil Solomon of Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.

George had a contagious laugh. Anyone who knew George can hear it now. He made friends with anyone he met. He loved to tell jokes and was even known to play the harmonica from memory. George loved trains and shared many hours with guests showing them his amazing model train setup. He held season basketball tickets for the New Castle Trojans for 60 years. He loved his community as well. George drove a school bus for 16 years and was a member of Breakfast Optimists. He received Optimist of the Year and received perfect attendance for several years. George was a builder by trade and during his career he built 40 homes in Raintree Heights. He also completed several home remodels within his community. His last project was the Family Center for his church.

George spent time after his retirement volunteering at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, but if you knew George you knew he never truly retired. You could find him lending a hand with any family project or church project that he was able to. He was a lifelong resident of New Castle until four years ago when he was moved to a long term care facility in Indianapolis that specialized in dementia care. George served his county in World War II and was stationed in France. Upon his return he met and married his wife Pauline (Koger) Solomon.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline (Koger) Solomon; his second wife, Grace (White) Solomon; sisters, Isabell Craft, Thelma Davis, and Agnes Solomon; a brother, Gerald Solomon.
