Hazel Grey Gatmaitan, 90, formerly of Knightstown passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018 in Keller, Texas. She was born in Pollocksville, North Carolina to the late Leo and Madie (Banks) White.
A trained surgical nurse, she worked with her husband, Dr. Alejandro Gatmaitan at his clinic in Knightstown for more than ten years. Previously, they had practiced medicine at various hospitals and on Indian reservations in Texas and Arizona. Afterwards, they moved to the Philippines, working together in his clinic for 11 years before returning to the United States, finally settling in Knightstown.
Hazel was a member of the American Nurses Assn., Tri-Kappa and St. Rose Catholic Church. Her hobbies included reading, needle-work and traveling. More than anything, Hazel loved her family and enjoyed cooking meals for them.
Survivors include her children: Arlene (Larry) Dunbar of Houston, TX., Ann (Bill) McSorley of Chicago, IL., Alex (Lori) Gatmaitan of Little Rock, AR., Al (Nancy) Gatmaitan of Indianapolis, IN. and Rozel (David) Moore of Keller, TX; 14 grandchildren: Greg (Carrie), Andy (Brianna) and Ryan (Clare) Dunbar, John, Michael and Julia McSorley, Abby, Emily and Matthew Gatmaitan, Lindsay, Ally and Christian Gatmaitan, Maggie and Ethan Moore; 4 great-grandchildren: Olive, Naomi, Tova and Austin Dunbar; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Leo White, Jr., Clara Williams, Billy White and Eula Hargett.
A Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 20, 2018 at St. Rose Catholic Church in
Knightstown with Father John Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 12:30 P.M. Saturday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel.
