Janet Hughes, 79, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Henry Community Health. She was born April 13, 1941 in Henry County to the late Harold and Hazel (Moon) Riggle.
Former owner of the Book Nook in New Castle, she enjoyed reading. Janet was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and an avid cat lover. She was a member of the New Castle (200 North) Church of Christ.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Teresa Faye Major of Avon; step-son, David Anthony (Carol) Hughes of Avon; daughters, Mary Downs and Teresa (John) Davis, both of Richmond; 7 grandchildren, Emily, Stefanie, James, Anna, Timothy, Jeremy and Sasha; 8 great-grandchildren, Evan, Zoey, Ethan, Ava, Samara, SaLeah, Troy and Drake; sister, Phyllis McCubbins of New Castle; brother, Dale Riggle of New Castle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her biological parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hughes; aunt and uncle that raised her, Fred and Helen Spencer, Janet considered them her parents; brother, Gerald Riggle and sisters, Virginia Courtney and Darlene Barrett
Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Green Hills Memory Gardens with Phil Morgan officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the HELP the Animals Shelter, 2101 West Main Street, Richmond, IN 47374.
