John R. Bullock

John R. Bullock, 71, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at his home after an extended illness. He was born on October 9, 1945 to Warren H. and Caroline (Razor) Bullock at Ball Hospital in Muncie.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister Martha.

He is survived by daughter, Joni (Brian) Farmer, brothers, Charles (Kelle) Bullock and Marc (Dianna) Bullock, five grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and his life companion, Sherry Dalton.

John attended school in both Mt. Summit and Middletown, graduating from Middletown in 1963. He attended Purdue University, earning a Bachelor of Science in animal science in 1967 and a Master’s of Science in 1969. He was an active member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where he made many lifelong friends and treasured memories.

He joined the Air Force in 1969, graduating from Officer Training School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas where he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1970, he earned his Pilot wings at Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma. From there, John upgraded to pilot in the EC-47 airplane; spending two years in 362nd Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron in Vietnam and Thailand. During that time, he flew 190 combat missions over South Vietnam, Loas and Cambodia. For his outstanding service to his country, he was promoted to Captain and awarded the Air Metal (with 4 oak leaf clusters) and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon returning to the states in 1972, he upgraded to pilot in the KC-135 Air Refueling Tanker. He spent his remaining two years in the Air Force, in this capacity, at Grissom AFB in Indiana. When his tour of duty was completed, John returned to a life of farming in the area of his childhood. He married Fran Nixon, mother of daughter, Joni. Their marriage lasted 20 years. His final years were spent farming and enjoying winter months in Texas with his life companion, best friend, devoted caregiver, and his rock, Sherry.

Services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service.
