Joseph Darrel Cooney, 76, of New Castle passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at I.U. Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born October 5, 1942 in Indianapolis, a son of the late Joseph Clinton and Phyllis Rebecca (Shafer) Cooney.
A 1961 graduate of Knightstown High School, Darrel attended Indiana University East in Richmond. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle following over 40 years of service. Active in Scouting for many years, he was an Eagle Scout and was also a Scout Master for several years. He was a member of the Hagerstown Masonic Lodge, and was also a Shriner. He enjoyed talking on ham radio for several years, using his call sign KB9GGN.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping, boating, swimming, and served as a lifeguard. For several years, he volunteered at the Christian Love Center, where he also served on the Board of Directors.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his significant other, Vickie Akers of New Castle; a daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Lenz of New Castle; a sister, Rheta (Tom) Eversman of Jonesboro, IN; four granddaughters, Leslie Lenz of McCordsville, Tiffany (Jason) Owens, Misty Lenz, and Cassidy Cooney, all of New Castle; four great-grandchildren, Robert Huesman and Alexis Smith, both of McCordsville and Logan and Jordan Owens, both of New Castle, as well as several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Clinton Cooney in 2005 and Phyllis (Shafer) Cooney in 2016; his wife, Beverly (Williams) Cooney in 2010, whom he married November 3, 1963; and a son, Scott Cooney in 2015.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with a memorial service following at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Juanita Suggs officiating.
