Josephine Hammond, 91, of Spiceland passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Waters of New Castle. She was born September 28, 1925 in Quinton, Kentucky to the late Walter and Hattie (Hughes) Nicholas.
Josephine was a member of the Spiceland United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She loved being a part of community activities, and spearheaded the church mincemeat fundraiser. Josephine enjoyed cooking, quilting and loved spending time with her family. She was a very caring person who put others first and volunteered with the Red Cross when her husband was in the service.
She is survived by two grandchildren, John C. (Jennifer) Hammond of Hilliard, OH and James C. (Angie) Hammond of Fishers; great grandchildren, Kaylyn, Emma, Jackson, Parker and Brooklyn Hammond; two sisters, Shirley Clark and Francis Madden, daughters in law, Lynnette (Tony) Hammond Siler of Burksville, KY and Peggy Hammond of Indianapolis; friend and caretaker, Karen Ostermyer and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Hammond, whom she married September 2, 1943, sons, Jack Eric and Steve Lee Hammond; sisters, Fonza Parker and Marcella Maloney; brothers, Amos, Andy and Jerry Nicholas.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Carol Wiley officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Friday, May 19 and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Spiceland United Methodist Church, P.O.
