Madonna E. Mawk

July 6, 1941 — September 7, 2022

Madonna E. Mawk, 81, of Mooreland passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022 in Fulton County, Indiana from injuries sustained in an auto accident. She was born July 6, 1941 in New Castle, Indiana, a daughter of the late Richard and Louise (Rowles) Holaday.

A lifelong resident of Mooreland, she was a 1959 graduate of Mooreland High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class, played in the band and was a cheerleader. She was a National Merit Scholar and graduated from Butler University, then received her master’s degree from Ball State University. Since the age of 12, Madonna played piano for the South Christian Church, where she was a member for over 70 years. She served on the Mooreland Fair Board and, for decades, helped organize the talent contests, baby contest and gospel sings, and often assisted with the Sunday night church service. She loved gospel music, playing the piano and singing for The Calvary Singers and The Promise. She also organized and promoted an annual musical fund raising event for Muscular Dystrophy at Hartford City for many years.

Madonna enjoyed her annual trip to the National Quartet Convention, where The Promise once performed. She was very musically talented--a published songwriter; singing and playing for weddings, nursing homes and various other events and giving piano lessons. Madonna was a gifted writer and wrote articles on events for The Courier Times, Muncie Star Press and Mooreland Fair newspaper. A teacher for several years, she also tutored children to compete in a national Math Pentathlon. Madonna was very involved in school athletics and academics, as well as extracurricular activities. Madonna loyally supported her husband John in his 45 year coaching career at Blue River Valley High School. She was a member of the Henry County Heart Society & a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. In her spare time, she enjoyed going to the Bruce Lake in northern Indiana and visiting relatives in Eastern Kentucky. But most of all, Madonna was a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, John R. Mawk; daughter, Cynthia Mawk (Greg Reece) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Mahaley L. Hagy (Aaron J. Tietjan) of Indianapolis and Nolan Wade Hagy of Indianapolis; great granddaughter, Malia Justine Tietjen; sister, Diana Conwell of Mooreland; several nieces, nephews and cousins; sisters-in-law, Della Mawk of Mooreland and Betty Duvall of Sulphur Springs; and a special friend Marlena Payne.

In addition to her parents, Madonna was preceded in death by a daughter, Shannon Ann Hagy; and an infant sister, Anita Louise.
