Murl Eugene “Gene” Carnes, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Community Hospital Anderson in Anderson, Indiana following an illness.
He is a native of Jamestown, Kentucky, the son of Luther and Cecile Carnes. He enjoyed residences in both Muncie, Indiana and Sun City, Arizona.
He is preceded in death by his siblings: James, Lewis, Logan, May (Hawkins), Mary (Rutledge), Eva (Fenne), Faye (Loy), and his sons: Gene A. and Steve.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Yvonne (York) Carnes; his son, Terry (Carolyn) Carnes; his stepchildren, Sondra Carnes, Salli Green, David (Lynn) Calhoun, and Linda (Jim) Spargur; his grandchildren, Jeremy Carnes, Rick Carnes, Lindsay (Brent) Rossman, Kaitlin (Michael) Welsh, and Tasman “Taz” Carnes; His step-grandchildren; Wally Brinkman, Christina Brinkman, Zac Calhoun, Kelsey Calhoun: his great granddaughter Elizabeth “Lizzy” Carnes; and many very close nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
In 1949, Gene joined the U.S. Air Force where he served in Europe following WWII. He raised his sons in New Castle, Indiana where he was an Industrial Arts Teacher at Chrysler High School.
Many wonderful memories were made with Gene fishing, boating, camping, playing cards, and laughing over family gatherings. He was an avid tennis enthusiast and bowled in several bowling leagues over the years. Gene enjoyed tending a vegetable garden in Indiana and citrus trees in Arizona, which he proudly shared with anyone who dropped by his home. He was genuinely kind man who truly lived life to the fullest, taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures.
Gene’s family is grateful for the compassionate care received from the staff of Community Hospital Anderson and Bethany Pointe Health Campus.
Services will be at 1:00 pm., Saturday August 10, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown
Funeral Service in New Castle with Ben French officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and one hour before services on Saturday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by contingents from the American Legion and VFW at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O.
