Peter Niven Kiger, 80, formerly of Dunreith, Indiana, passed away August 19th at the Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle. He was born November 4, 1938, in Indianapolis, the son of Bill and Louise (Niven) Kiger.
Peter graduated from Spiceland High School in 1956 and then graduated with honors in pre-med from DePauw University in 1960. He spent a year in medical school at Northwestern, followed by a year in federal prison as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. After that, he spent eight years working for the War Resisters League in New York City until the end of the war. Peter was a Quaker and his life mission was peacemaking. After the War Resisters League, he attended Tufts Medical School for four years and worked with Boston’s mentor program caring for disturbed youths. He then spent three years at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and graduated in 1983. He then practiced naturopathic medicine there in Portland until he returned to Indiana in 1987 to care for his parents in Dunreith - which he did until his father’s death in 2004. Since Indiana did not license naturopaths at the time, Peter got a job delivering the Indianapolis Star, the Knightstown Banner, and the New Castle Courier - a job that he loved and which he did until he could no longer drive. After his parents’ deaths, he used the family home in Dunreith to provide shelter for many families who had fallen on hard times.
Peter is survived by his sister, Gretchen Cryer of New York City, his sister-in-law, Judy Sadler of Falmouth, seven nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews from all over the country, his beloved caretaker, Kim Hayes, and his constant companion - his dog, Blackie.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Christopher McKern Kiger.
There will be a celebration of his life service at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel. Burial will be at Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to B.A.M. (Believe and Achieve Mentoring), PO Box 464 New Castle, IN 47362.
