Richard "Dick" L. Richey

Richard L. “Dick” Richey, 88, of Knightstown, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center. He was born August 6, 1928 at home in Cumberland, IN a son of James Franklin and Blanche Olive (Jessup) Richey.

Dick was a 1946 graduate of Knightstown High School where he played baseball and was basketball team manager. He was Building Trades Instructor at the Soldiers and Sailors’ Children’s Home for 20 years from 1976-1996. He learned construction from his father and built and remodeled many homes in the Henry County area. Dick was a member for the Knightstown Volunteer Fire Department where he was Fire Chief for 25 years. He had also served as the Knightstown Building Inspector. He was a birthright Quaker and a member of the Knightstown Friends Church his whole life. He was a 50 year Mason, member of Shriners and the Knightstown Masonic Lodge #16. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion and Habitat for Humanity. Dick had done volunteer work at Quaker Haven and helped build the gazebo on the Knightstown town square for the bicentennial. In his early years, Dick raced horses at Shirley “Alfalfa Downs”, coached Little League and had a bowling team called “Richey’s Hotrods.”

Richard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy (McClurg) Richey of Knightstown; children, Cheryl “Sissie” (Bill) Leverton of Ft. Wayne, Robin Richey of Knightstown, Kim Richard (Shari) Richey of Zionsville, Kevin “Doc” Richey of Knightstown; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sister-in-law, June Richey of New Palestine; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by half brother, Francis Richey, two brothers, Jim and Mick (Tippy) Richey; a sister, Barbara Richey.

Services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Knightstown Friends Church with Tim Basford and Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 AM until time of service.
