Sandra Kay (Murray) Alexander, 73, of Spiceland passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after valiantly confronting multiple health problems for the last several years. She was born in Independence, Virginia on December 14, 1946 to the late James L. and Virginia (Barnes) Murray.
Sandra was 1965 graduate of Spiceland High School and attended Purdue University where she met the love of her life, Phillip Alexander, who predeceased her on December 31, 2018. She and Phil were married on September 3, 1966. She worked at Purdue as a secretary in the Purdue School of Aviation.
In 1968, she and Phil moved to Richmond, Indiana where he did graduate work at the Earlham School of Religion. The couple then moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Sandra worked as a secretary in the Biology Department at the University of Kentucky. After several years in Lexington, Phil and Sandra moved to Altamont springs, Florida where Phil managed a Red Lobster Restaurant. After a year, Phil was transferred to Fairfield, Ohio where they were able to live in the same house for over forty years and raise their son, Douglas. Sandra worked for many years as a purchasing agent for the Army corps of Engineers and then at the Food and Drug Administration in Cincinnati. In 2017, after retirement, they made a move to Spiceland, Sandra’s home town.
Sandra was a member of the Spiceland Friends Church and Eastern Star. She and Phil had a heart for dogs and cats. They were active in the Midwest Boston Terrier Rescue group and are survived by their faithful companions Bugsy and Ginger and Annie the cat.
Sandra is survived by her brother, Gerald (Jerry) Murray of Daleville and Donnie Murray of Spiceland. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Hildegard Murray of Spiceland; nieces, Abby (Adam) Slye of Yorktown, Andrea (Aaron) Watts of McCordsville, Christina Allison of New Castle, Heidi (Rick) Grider of Spiceland, Victoria (Ryan) Flaherty of Evansville, Emilynne (Tim) Ramsey of Owensville and Samantha Murray of Evansville.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sandra was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Alexander, brothers, Lonnie, Danny and Douglas Murray; sister, Julie Murray, as well as a sister-in-law, Sandra Murray.
Services will be at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Spiceland Friends Church with David Brock and Cathy Harris officiating.
