Stephen Lee Thurston, 35, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in Indianapolis. He was born December 29, 1983 in Muncie to David and Priscilla (Miller) Thurston.
He was a 2002 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. Stephen was a passionate basketball fan, and although unable to participate, he was privileged to serve as Manager on the New Castle Trojan basketball team. An avid gamer, he was Game Stop’s #1 customer. He preordered multiple games on a regular basis and would beat them within 2 days! He was a major fan of the L.A. Lakers and LeBron James.
Stephen’s life was filled with physical challenges, which in turn made him inspire and encourage everyone he was around. His fun and unique personality enabled him to “make each person’s day” who met him. Stephen endured three transplants; two liver transplants at ages 2 and 8, and a kidney transplant at age 27. He was no stranger to challenges, but met them head on with grace and determination.
Above all else, he loved being with his family. He lit up each time any of them came to visit him.
Survivors include his mother, Priscilla Thurston; siblings, Elizabeth (Duane) Bentley, Matt Thurston (Shawn Marcum), and Sarah (Randy) Madison; nieces and nephews, Rheanna Hill, Alan and Olivia Bentley, Xania, Chloe and Willow Thurston, Jada Johnson, Dakota, Brent, Trevor and Maci Madison; a very special friend and caregiver, Susan Boggs; his beloved pet guinea pig, Fuzzy; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, William David Thurston; paternal grandparents, Hulon and Marjorie Thurston; maternal grandparents, Paul and Thelma Miller; uncles, Gary Thurston, Jeff Madison; aunt, Pat Donica.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Visitation will be Friday, September 27th from 4 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. You may express condolences or share a memory of Stephen at
