Sylvia C. Denney

February 15, 1933 — June 14, 2018

Sylvia C. (Keaton) Denney, New Castle, traded this earthly body for a heavenly one. After a lengthy and trying illness, she passed June 14, 2018. She leaves behind a daughter, Cathy Ann, who was her caregiver, companion, and friend. She also leaves dearly loved son-in-law, Dennis, two granddaughters, Sarah Marie Davis Hamilton and Marianne (Noel) Hamilton Lopez, and three great grandchildren, Sebastian, Miles, and Elena.

Prior to her extended illness, Mrs. Denney had several occupations. She had worked at Firestone, at Henry County Hospital, and at the State Hospital. She worked at various motels and restaurants. She was a woman who worked all her life, really.

Hands down, her favorite job of all time came in her latter years when she worked for fifteen years as a Foster Grandparent. She quit that job only when her illness was impacting her attendance. She explained that “those little children need a grandma who can be with them every day.”

Sylvia had been an accomplished seamstress and a renowned cook. She collected angel figurines and loved to draw. She loved animals and was known for adopting abandoned ones. Perhaps her finest asset was her sense of humor and her sincere love of people. She made and kept wonderful friends of different walks of life.

She doted on her granddaughters as little children, making sure they had a trip to Memorial Park every summer they visited her from Ohio. She shared so many memories of those earlier days in these last months.

She was blessed in her special friends Sonny Atkinson, Jessie Turner, her telephone partner and niece Barbara Dalton, her pizza buddy and nephew, Bill Denney, and her many church friends. Her new friend Jesse Mahmoudi was just perfect for these last two months. Employees of Senior Helpers and Bethany Cares were wonderful companions during this time of struggle.

Until health issues prevented it, she was faithful to her Northside Church of God, New Castle.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Mary Catherine Keaton, her husband, Robert Denney, four siblings (Joe, Delcie, Lucille, and Claude Ray), a special sister-in-law, Vechell Keaton Short, her first son-in-law Ron Davis, and several nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Sylvia was born February 6, 1933, in Rowan County, KY, moving to Henry County as a late teenager. She then spent her life in Henry County, IN, primarily in New Castle.

Sylvia passed as she had lived, with independence and humor and holding onto her faith in an almighty and loving God.

While flowers are lovely and appreciated, contributions may be made to the Hope Initiative’s EXPO Project and Early Learning, 1426 Broad St., New Castle, IN 47362, which would honor her love of the park and for children. Her viewing will be from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2018 at Hinsey Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, with her final service at 10:30 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Phil Brown officiating and Rev. Elwood Evans offering benediction. Interment will be at South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition on SR 3. After the burial service, a light meal will be offered at Northside Church of God Fellowship Hall. You may express condolences or share a memory of Sylvia at www.hinsey-brown.com .
