Vernon T. Gwinn, 94, of New Castle passed away Friday, May 7, 2021 at Henry Community Health. He was born June 26, 1926 in New Castle to the late Delbert and Mable (Ruth) Gwinn.
Vernon attended New Castle High School and was drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944-1946, serving in the Pacific Theater as part of the Philippine Liberation. Following the service, he spent several years with the Civil Air Patrol. He retired from Chrysler Corporation following 33 years of service. Vernon attended First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the VFW. In his younger years, he created his own radio station that broadcast on Sundays, WNLE 1600 AM, playing big band music. He was an avid model airplane enthusiast and a collector of big band records.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Phyllis Ann Gwinn; children, Timothy Lee (Billie) Gwinn of New Castle, Rick Allen (Marjorie) Gwinn of Palos Verdes Estates, California, Rebecca Lynn Fitzgerald of Greenfield, Jody Scott Gwinn of New Castle and Carol “Butch” Gwinn of New Castle; grandchildren, Paula (Kent) Bupb, Chris (Natalie) Gwinn, Neil Gwinn, Michelle (Brad) Bandel, Katie Gwinn, Sean Fitzgerald, Tyler (Megan) Fitzgerald and Zachariah Gwinn; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Danny Goddard and Woody Kreuzinger officiating. Burial will follow in Batson Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until time of services Wednesday. Military rites will be conducted by contingents from the American Legion, VFW and U.S. Army at the cemetery.
