Alma J. Van Alst, 89, of Sulphur Springs, was called home by the Lord, August 19, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Muncie. She was born April 20, 1925 in New Salem, Indiana to the late Russell and Margaret (Trager) Poer.
A 1943 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, she retired from Becker Brothers Master Market in New Castle after several years of service. She was a member of Old Town Hill Baptist Church in Muncie. Alma loved to cook, was a master baker, and was especially known for her famous cherry pies. She enjoyed camping, boating and cooking out.
Survivors include four sons, Bill (Kathy) Van Alst of New Castle, Gerry Van Alst of Middletown, Jim (Cindy) Van Alst of Yorktown and Bruce (Teri) Van Alst of Anderson; fourteen grandchildren, Michelle, Ryan, Jamie, Jason, Lindsay, Scott, Amy, Tanya, Angie, Tori, Cami, Holli, Greg and Matt; thirty two great-grandchildren, one sister, Marilyn Reagan of Sulphur Springs; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 61 years, James Van Alst, who Alma so loyally cared for, and who passed in 2008; a brother, Albert Poer; four sisters, Reba Poer, Beulah Milne, Janet Patterson and Colleen Vaught.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Jeff Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
