Blake L. Hurst

Blake L. Hurst is now in the arms of Jesus his Lord and Savior. Blake died on Monday, July 27, 2026 at Henry Community Health. He was born on November 14, 1958, and he was the youngest son of General B. Hurst and Ruth I. (Flowers) Hurst.

Blake graduated from Walter P. Memorial Chrysler High School in 1977. After graduation, he worked delivering the Courier Times. Later, he went to work for the City of New Castle in the Maintenance Department and Parks Department. Blake took pride in his work when he worked at South Mound Cemetery. One of his responsibilities was to open and close the graves and keeping appearance of the cemetery in a pristine manner, which he did. Later, Blake worked in the Mail room of the Courier Times. There, he helped prepare and kept a correct count of newspapers of the city routes and all motor routes. He also assisted the motor route drivers. For a number of years, Blake worked at the Dairy Queen, maintaining the inside and outside of the building.

Blake and his friend, Bill Lantz, volunteered at a local nursing home singing and ministering to the residents every other week which he enjoyed very much. Blake was active in various memberships of the Foursquare Gospel Church in New Castle as well at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Muncie. Blake was a very devoted and caring son to his mother, Ruth during her life time. A lifetime member of the Foursquare Gospel Church in New Castle, which was founded by his maternal grandfather and grandmother, Reverend Lindsay and Lovie Mae Flowers.

Blake loved his Siberian Huskies. His first dog was Kodiak and the second one was Paxton, which he named after towns in Alaska. Blake would walk the dogs every day usually 5 miles, rain or shine. People have asked him if he was a professional dog trainer as his dogs minded so well.

Blake is survived by his brother, Blaine Hurst, (wife, Becky) and his nephew, David Hurst of Waxhaw, N.C. He is also survived by his aunt, Bobbie Jackson of Indianapolis IN; cousins, Bryan Carter Sr., Jennifer Springer (husband, Matthew), Bryan Carter Jr., Austin Carter and Calvin Blake Springer and several other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, General B. Hurst, 2013, his mother, Ruth I. Hurst in 2025; his maternal grandparents, Rev. Lindsay and Lovie Mae Flowers; his paternal grandparents, James B. and Wytie Hurst.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Foursquare Gospel Church with Pastor Jim Becker officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 31 at Foursquare Gospel Church.
