Brent Skip Harter

Brent Skip Harter, 65, passed away unexpectedly on September 21, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, friendships, stories, and people who were better simply because they had the privilege of knowing him. Born on March 3, 1961, in New Castle, Indiana, Skip was raised in Mt. Summit, Indiana, by his parents, Gary and Louise Harter, who preceded him in death.

Skip was a 1979 graduate of Blue River Valley Junior-Senior High School. He was the second oldest of five children and is survived by his siblings, Scott, Shawn, Ginger, and Shannon.

Skip was a man who was always on the go. Sitting still was never really his thing. He loved being with friends, exploring new places, riding his Harley, and most of all, making memories with the people around him. While his roots were planted firmly in Indiana, pieces of his heart were scattered across the country—from Colorado to West Virginia or Florida to Arizona and countless places in between. Everywhere he went, he left a piece of himself behind and gained another group of people who considered him a friend.

If there was one thing people could always count on, it was Skip. He was often described as the hardest worker in the room with the biggest heart. He was the guy you called when you needed to know how to do something. He was the guy who showed up when something needed to get done. And he was the guy you called when the only plan was to go have a good time.

Skip had a way of holding people accountable without ever making them feel alone. He could tell you exactly what you needed to hear, all while having his arm around your shoulder. He cared deeply about people and wasn't afraid to push them to be better, because he believed in them.

He lived life his way. He worked hard, played hard, loved hard, and never needed anyone's permission to be exactly who he was.

Perhaps Skip's greatest gift was the ability to make people smile. He could walk through the door and instantly change the energy in the room. His presence was larger than life, his laugh was contagious, and his personality had a way of bringing people together. Seeing others smile was what fueled his fire.

Skip was a father to four sons—Matt, Josh (Fiancé Christy), Justin (Spouse Ellen) and Corey; and a grandfather to five grandchildren: Madison, Ava, Emma, Lennon, and Demi, and one great grandchild; Everett.

However, trying to describe Skip only by the family he was born into or the family he raised would never tell the whole story because Skip had a way of making everyone feel like family.

His absence will be felt far beyond his hometown. It will be felt in garages, on motorcycles, around campfires, at kitchen tables, on job sites, at gatherings, and in all the places where someone will instinctively reach for their phone to call Skip—only to remember that he isn't going to answer.

There will never be another Brent “Skip” Harter.

He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and the many people across the country who were lucky enough to call him their friend.

Ride easy, Skip.

You left tire tracks across a lot of roads, but more importantly, you left footprints across a lot of hearts.

And those will never fade.

Services will be at 8:00pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Steve Gallaway officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00pm until the time of the service on Saturday. A private graveside service and burial at Mt. Summit Cemetery will take place at a later date.
