Charles Winston Atkinson, Sr., 84, of New Castle passed away Monday, September 1, 2025 at Henry Community Health. He was born March 15, 1941 in Miami, Florida to Ottis and Virgie (Sutton) Atkinson.
Chuck was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he was a sharp shooter He worked for McCullough Steel Mill in Detroit, Michigan, retiring after ten years of service. Charlie then became an electrician and worked for Boys Electric Company in Palm Bay, Florida and at Cape Canaveral. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in New Castle where he was a part of the Joy Club. Chuck was also a previous member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling and dancing. A master negotiator, he was always looking for a “good deal”.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janice (McCreary) Atkinson, whom he married April, 19, 1985; three children, Chuck Atkinson, Jr. of Melbourne, Florida, Lorriane Atkinson of Detroit, Michigan and John Thomas (Jenny) Atkinson of Detroit, Michigan; stepson, Gregg (Misty) Burris of Rushville; several grandchildren including India Burris, Byron and Nadia Burris, Chase Nathan Atkinson, Dillon Atkinson, Sophie Lynn Lugo, Alan Andrew Atkinson and Heather Nicole Atkinson; sister, Eugenia Duplissey of Palm Bay, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerome “Joby” Atkinson, Alvin Atkinson and William Atkinson.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Jimmy Southerland officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial will follow at Laurel North Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Chuck’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
