Cheryl Darlene Hammond

New Castle

Cheryl Darlene Hammond, 78, a resident of New Castle, passed away peacefully at Glen Oaks Health Campus on Sunday, February 2, 2025 following a long illness.

She was born on July 10, 1946, in Somerset, KY, the oldest child of Edward and Ethel (Jones) Dishman.

Darlene was a 1964 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School and attended Ball State University.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, family was everything to Darlene. She often could be found at her grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals in recent years. 

An avid reader and lover of books, Darlene was the manager of Readmore Book Store for many years. She also realized the dream of owning her own bookstore, Main Street Bookstore before retiring.

Darlene is survived by her children, Bryan (Karen) Hammond of Indianapolis, Kelly (Patrick) Hall of Edwardsburg, MI and Brandon Hammond of Tipton; six grandchildren, Brittany (Ben) Burris, Andrew (Krista) Burns, all of New Castle, Dr. Kevin (Mary Anne) Hammond of Cincinnati, OH, Kristin Hammond of Indianapolis, Blake Hammond and Brooklyn Hammond, both of New Castle; three great grandchildren, Brileigh Burris, Remington Burns, and Paisley Burns. She is also survived by her sister, JoAnn Lawson of New Castle, brothers Doug Dishman of New Castle and Marty Dishman of Fishers, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Hammond on May 28, 2011, her parents, a brother Gary Dishman, and sister Katy Dishman.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor David Burgess officiating. Entombment will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be given to the New Castle Henry County Public Library, 376 S. 15th St., New Castle, IN 47362.
