Clarence Joseph “Joe” Herndon, 97, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at his home. He was born September 17, 1928 in Raven Virginia to the late John and Myrtle (Horton) Herndon.

Joe was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean conflict. He retired from Westinghouse Corporation in 1990 after twenty-five years of service. Joe was a long-time member of the First Assembly of God where he was actively involved anywhere he was needed. He was a member of IUE local 917. Joe was a faithful volunteer at God’s Grain Bin and Shepherds Door food pantries. Joe had many hobbies including restoring cars, playing the fiddle with bluegrass groups and spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish Joe’s memory include his wife, Betty (Hunter) Wilbur Herndon of New Castle; three daughters, Martha Elouise (Chuck) Paine of New Castle, Dorothy Elaine (Rev. Dan) Jarvis of Lovell, Wyoming and Mary Jo (Rev. Roger) Hendricks of New Castle; one son, John (Julie) Herndon of Anderson; three step-sons, Thomas Wilbur of Bronners Ferry, Idaho, Robert Wilbur of Indianapolis and Kelly (Melanie) Wilbur of Indianapolis; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Herndon; brother, Linford Herndon and a sister, Dorothy Hess.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2025 at First Assembly of God in New Castle with Pastors Steve Gallaway and Chris Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle. Military rites will be provided by contingents of the U.S. Army, American Legion and the VFW. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Gods Grain Bin or Shepherd's Door Food Pantries, envelopes available at the funeral home.
