David Lee Schmittler, 79, of Hagerstown passed away Monday, November 2, 2026 at IU Health Ball Hospital. He was born May 1, 1947 in Newton, Illinois to the late Lawrence and Wilma (Johnson) Schmittler.
A life shaped by his upbringing as a preacher's son, David carried a steadfast faith. After graduating from Clinton Prairie High School in 1965, he answered the call of duty by joining the Navy in 1966, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. Hancock aircraft carrier until 1970. Outside of his service, David was a man of diverse interests and remarkable talents; he was a passionate history buff who loved studying the life of Abraham Lincoln, and he felt most at home spending hours in his barn. A true jack-of-all-trades who could literally fix or build anything. More than anything, he enjoyed being with his grandkids, especially taking them Christmas shopping every year, buying and watching the fireworks with them and putting up the American flag. David retired from Chrysler Corp. following 36 years of dedicated service.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pam Schmittler; a daughter, Cindi (Troy) Conwell; grandchildren, Devin Conwell and Meckenzie Conwell; siblings, Perry (Sally) Schmittler and Debbie (Al) LaPointe; brothers-in-law, Tim (Jeannie) Walker and Clint (Melanie) Walker and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Becky Hunley; a brother-in-law, Tom Walker and a niece, Tami Tracy.
Grave side services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7 at Mooreland Cemetery with Pastor Paul Gearhardt officiating. Military honors will be conducted by contingents from the U.S. Navy, New Castle American Legion and VFW. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritans Purse, PO Box 3000 Boone, NC 28607. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. You may express condolences or share a memory of David at www.hinsey-brown.com.
