Donald “Don” Cummings, 90, of New Castle passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Henry Community Health. He was born in Clinton County, Kentucky on August 23, 1935, a son of the late John I. and Minnie Lee Garrett Cummings.
Don was a 1954 graduate of Straughn High School where he lettered four years in both basketball and baseball. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. During his military service, he was awarded Outstanding Soldier of the Month in October 1957.
Following his military service, Don returned to Indiana and worked as a well driller for 5 years before fully committing to Chrysler Corporation for the next 28 years where he retired in 1991 as a production superintendent. After retirement from Chrysler, Don raised cattle and helped maintain the family farm.
Family was the most important part of Don’s life. He was the “Rock” of the family. On November 13, 1976, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Addison and they began to raise their family that included four children. Don was a cherished husband and amazing father and grandfather.
He was a faithful member of Cadiz Christian Church for over 30 years where he taught Sunday School for many of those years. Don also volunteered at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He enjoyed golfing, attending NASCAR races and listening to bluegrass music.
Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Cummings of New Castle; children, Brad (Staci) Myers of Arlington, Shelley (Duane) Fortune of Shirley, Randy Cummings of Florida and Amy (Robert) Mores of Hebron; eight grandchildren, Inken Myers, Addison Isaacs, Shane Fortune, Kendall Mores, Presley Fortune, Bailey Treba, Sadie Myers and Parker Mores; three great grandchildren, Peyten and Lochlan Isaacs and Rini Treba; half-sister, Peggy Covey of Albany, KY; half-brother, Don Cummings of Kentucky; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin, Horace, Raymond, Luther and Barnel Cummings; sisters, Martha Covert, Opal Anna Ford and Imagine True; half-brother, Lon Cummings.
Services will be held at 10:00am Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Jeff Johnson and Greg Robbins officiating. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
