New Castle

Donald Warren Hinshaw, 93, of New Castle passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2026. He was born September 12, 1932 in Millville, Indiana to the late William and Edith (Evans) Hinshaw. Don was born in the front bedroom of a farm house on the Farmers Pike and was the youngest of seven children.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School in 1951 and entered the United State Air Force in 1952 and married the love of his life, Shirley Maddy. That union lasted for 73 years before her passing in January of 2026. He attended Ball State University. Don retired from Westinghouse/ABB in 1992. Not one to sit down, he had several jobs which he enjoyed. The best was helping with his grandchildren. What a blessing that was.

He became a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Castle in 1969 where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Give and Take Sunday school class for many years. He was on the committee for Habitat for Humanity in New Castle, volunteered at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for over 30 years, was the Chamber of Commerce person of the year in 2009. Two accomplishments that he was very proud of was organizing a special program that honored 13 World War II veterans and a county wide celebration with 47 World War II veterans in attendance. Don was also a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 30 years and enjoyed landscaping, family vacations and helping his children with many hands-on projects.

Survivors include his children, Karen (Brian) Atterson, Bruce (Susan) Hinshaw and Tom (Laura) Hinshaw; grandchildren, Corey Atterson, Ashlyn Hinshaw, Claire Hinshaw, Blake (Jayde) Hinshaw, Kate (Matt) Franz, Hanna (Michael) Wartenberg; Ethan Atterson, Luke Atterson, Max, Eli, Sam and Annie Gabovitch; a brother, Robert Hinshaw and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley K. Hinshaw; and his siblings, Hubert, Cecil and Opal.
