Doris Irene Johnson

Doris Irene Johnson, age 94, of New Castle joined her husband, Dick of 76 years, 11 days after his passing. Doris passed Thursday, June 5th, 2025, which would have been Dick’s 95th birthday. She passed after a short stay at The Willows of New Castle. They are now back together and resting in the arms of Jesus. Born on December 16, 1930, in Springport, Indiana, Doris was a daughter of the late Joe O. and Aletha Love (Fosnight) Eckrote.

Doris was a 1948 graduate of Mount Summit High School. She was a devoted homemaker throughout most of her married life and a woman of strong faith, attending First United Methodist Church. She was a longtime member—spanning 45 years—of the Rose City Vagabonds Camping Club and was also involved with the National Campers and Hikers Association. Doris found great joy in simple pleasures: working jigsaw puzzles, solving word searches, and watching NASCAR and golf.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Tony) Wright of New Castle; grandchildren, Matt (Amy) Wright of West Lafayette and Amanda (Zac) Jones of New Castle; and her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Mason Wright, Makenzie and Dylan Foga; several cherished nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Lee Johnson; 11 siblings, Thelma Longwell, Gerald Eckrote, Geraldine Ray, Imogene Cain, Dale Eckrote, Joe Eckrote Jr., James Robert Eckrote, Russell Eckrote, Waneta Johnson and Donna Hoagland.

Services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with burial to follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition.
